Remnant Population: This was published when Elizabeth Moon was around 50, and it shows. A postmenopausal woman hides while her space colony is evacuated so she doesn't have to deal with humans' BS anymore. After a few years, aliens show up and she says, "Heck no, I'm not taking care of you f'ers either," and teaches them to mop. The protagonist was memorable and the book has some good ideas about how we can get the benefits of living in a community without the oppression it can sometimes include.
